HIPAA - Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was instituted by the Federal Government in order to help insure the security of medical records in this age of electronic data transmission. All health care providers involved in the treatment of Medicare patients are subject to these guidelines and regulations. In most cases, the regulations are comparable to those established by individual states.
